Hemorrhoid Therapy
Hemorrhoids can be a very annoying problem, and oftentimes, they are refractory to normal remedies, i.e., they keep coming back. If you are experiencing recurring hemorrhoids and want complete and permanent relief, Dr. Rom Gupta is your go-to provider.
Dr. Gupta, a gastroenterologist with expertise in internal medicine, will guide you through the best approach to treating hemorrhoids. At Digestive Disease & Nutrition, we try our best to treat every patient with minimally invasive procedures. Therefore, you can rest assured that you will get experienced, effective, and safe services at our clinic.
Home Therapy
Hemorrhoids therapy usually starts with lifestyle changes. You will be required to change your diet, eating habits, and bathroom habits to avoid risk factors leading to hemorrhoids. These lifestyle changes are part of therapy regardless of the severity of your hemorrhoids.
You should eat high-fiber foods like fruits and green vegetables, as fiber tends to make stool softer. Over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams are also an option as they can reduce swelling and hemorrhoids. Also, you can soak regularly in a warm bath, which will help soften stool and heal irritated tissues.
Medications
During your care at Digestive Disease & Nutrition, you may be prescribed over-the-counter creams, pain killers (acetaminophen), steroids (hydrocortisone), and/or local anesthetics (lidocaine). These medications are used topically to relieve symptoms, while you continue implementing lifestyle changes to resolve your hemorrhoids. You shouldn’t use these medications for more than a week, and if your symptoms persist, we’ll switch to a different therapeutic option.
Other therapies that Dr. Gupta provides are minimally invasive procedures and surgical treatment for refractory hemorrhoids.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
In case you have persistent or painful bleeding hemorrhoids, Dr. Gupta may suggest minimally invasive procedures. These procedures, as the name suggests, don’t require full-blown surgery. These treatments are performed in our state-of-the-art clinic by Dr. Gupta.
Some of these procedures are rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, and coagulation. Rubber band ligation is a procedure in which two tiny rubber bands around the base of an internal hemorrhoid cut off its circulation. Hemorrhoid banding might be painful and bleed for a couple of days.
Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which the doctor injects a chemical solution to shrink the hemorrhoid tissue, while coagulation uses laser or infra-red light or heat to harden the bleeding internal hemorrhoids, which eventually wither away. Coagulation and sclerotherapy have fewer side effects than hemorrhoid banding but may be less effective in certain cases.
