Below is a list of conditions that Dr. Rom Gupta specializes in:
Peptic ulcer is a disease where ulcers or painful sores develop within the lining of the stomach or in the lining of the small intestine (the duodenum). In healthy organs, a coat of mucus is present over the lining to protect from the extremely acidic digestive juices present in the stomach.
Celiac disease is an extremely painful immune condition in which an individual cannot eat gluten in foods, because it severely damages their small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in foods that have wheat, rye, or barley. If you have celiac disease and eat foods with gluten, your immune system will respond by attacking your small intestine.
When there is too much fat in your stool, it is referred to as steatorrhea. This may be a result of consuming excessive amounts of fatty and greasy foods. However, in some cases, it may also be a sign of malabsorption. This means that your body is either not making enough of the required enzymes or bile to digest and absorb the excessive fat.
If you are experiencing symptoms associated with steatorrhea, make an appointment to talk with your doctor or call us at (718) 291-0488.
Malabsorption is any complication in the digestion and/or absorption of nutrients from food in the small intestines. Malabsorption affects both growth and development of an individual, and in worse case scenarios, leads to complications like certain diseases. There are two main diseases widely known to cause malabsorption, cystic fibrosis and chronic pancreatitis.
Lactose intolerance occurs when your body can't break down or digest lactose. Lactose is a sugar widely found in milk and products with diary, e.g., ice cream and cheese. Lactose intolerance occurs when your intestine does not make enough or any of a digestive enzyme called lactase. Lactase is the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose to make smaller sugars that can be absorbed. Without these enzymes, the bacteria in the intestines break the sugar down, making gas as a by-product. Abdominal gas is a common complaint of lactose intolerant patients.
Obesity occurs when your body has an extremely high proportion of body fat. Obesity may cause many co-morbidities or associated diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Therefore, it is necessary to have a balanced diet or your condition could get out of hand. Contact your physician to help maintain your ideal body composition.
